A Nordic Research Training course on Cryptology and Its Applications will be held during the period June 10-18, 2004 in the High-Technology Centre in Bergen, Norway.
The organizers and contacts from the Nordic contries are:
  • Professor Tor Helleseth, University of Bergen, Norway (local organizer).
  • Professor Thomas Johansson, Lund University, Sweden.
  • Professor Lars R. Knudsen, Technical University of Denmark, Denmark.
  • Professor Kaisa Nyberg, Nokia Research Center and Helsinki University of Technology, Finland.

The scientific content of the course

The purpose of this research training course is to give an introduction on an advanced level in the state-of-the-art of modern cryptographic techniques and its applications in providing information security in society.
The course will be aimed at PhD students and researchers at universities and the industry that need an advanced and up-to-date knowledge of this area.
The research training will include basic cryptographic techniques, symmetric and asymmetric key cryptography, keyless cryptography, design and analysis of cryptosystems, cryptographic protocols, security in wireless communication and related topics. An overview over applications of cryptosystems and standardization work for cryptographic solutions will also be given.

Lecturers

The lecturers at the course will be two world-leading researchers and five Nordic professors: Both James Massey and Ronald Rivest are known as extremely competent and inspiring lecturers and prominent researchers.
The Nordic teachers are all researchers on an advanced international level within cryptography, with publications in the leading journals and conference proceedings as well as participation in numerous program committees in the leading international crypto conferences all over the world. They have also been invited speakers at numerous international conferences in cryptology.

Schedule

The research course will last for nine days, June 10-18, 2004 with teaching eight of the days. Every day the teaching at the course will consist of four hours of lectures and two hours of group discussions or exercises.

The first few days the lectures will give an advanced introduction of basic cryptographic techniques. Among the basic techniques and other topics that will be given at the Nordic research course are: secret key and public key cryptosystems, block ciphers, stream ciphers, authentication codes, hash functions, digital signatures, complexity, zero knowledge techniques, cryptographic protocols and an overview of standardisation of cryptographic solutions. In addition many practical examples of cryptographic solutions will be given for example in wireless systems.

There will be four hours of lectures and two hours of group discussions or exercises every day, except Sunday June 13. This day we plan a full day excursion of the popular tour Norway in a Nutshell. This is a tour by train, bus and boat through the western part of Norway. This is a scenic tourist attraction and will also give the participants a good opportunity to get to know each other better. We know by experience that the establishments of such contacts can be of significant value for future research collaborations.

Litterature

To ensure that the participants have a relative homogenous background we will propose literature for them in advance such that the participants can be as well prepared as possible to ease the learning process. Some preliminary suggestions for literature may be the following: During the course, the teachers will be asked to give handouts of their lecture notes during the course. The course notes will also be made available via a dedicated web-page.
